...to make room for a family of Marmosets

I finally made the decision to uninstall WoW. I don't think I'm going back at this point, though I've backed up everything I need to just in case the bug bites me again. It's kinda ridiculous that I think of this as a journal worthy event, but given how many years it has been a part of my life, it seems at least somewhat significant.

"Why uninstall WoW?" one might ask. Three words: Steam Summer Sale.

Newest aquisition: Torchlight, Bioshock, Bioshock 2. Monetary Cost: $14. HD space cost: 15GB. Chance that this is the end of spending for this sale: Nearly infinitesimal.

Needless to say, a new comp with shiny gigantic hard-drives has wormed its way to the top of my want list.

Afterthought: Quantum Conundrum is Windows 7 only? wtf?!

Yeesh, I need to update this thing more often. It's been my critique of the Vancouver 2010 opening ceremony since, well, the 2010 opening ceremony .

This seems like an opportune time to make a new journal. My life has been changing in a lot of little ways over the past while (read: the past several months. Boy, do I need to update more.)

Physically, I've been making a point of living a [slightly] healthier lifestyle, including a better diet, a little more exercise (though not much more until I can find out what causes my heart rate to spike without warning) and overcoming my fear of doctors enough to go get myself a GP (see previous parentheses).

Professionally *snicker*, I'm training to take up the back-up receiver position in my store which is a whole new ball of wax compared to anything I've done up to this point. The training under the main receiver has been interesting and kinda fun so far, but I will admit that I am very apprehensive about taking the reins on my own for a week, when he goes on hoilday, with only 6 days of training under my belt *twitch*. Needless to say, I've been taking notes.

Technologically, I have joined the rest of the 21st century and finally gotten myself a smart-phone, specifically an iPhone 4. I have been having so much fun with it so far and it's already starting to prove itself useful for keeping me connected away from home. Though, I must admit, the biggest difference for me is just being able to surf the net from anywhere within my home wireless bubble. There is something nice about watching youtube videos on my balcony or a livestream in my kitchen.

Personally, the biggest change to my life has been to influx of brony culture. I was nipped by the pony bug and started watching the show way back in February, but it has only been during the summer that I really started to explore the subculture which has popped up online. I have been finding and enjoying a plethora of comics, artwork, music, videos, fanfiction and podcasts across the net (much of it being here on DA). My days are pretty much interwoven with pony now. I'm constantly checking Equestria Daily (one of the major hubs of bronydom) for new content. The various pony podcasts and videos have fallen into step beside my other internet obsession of LoadingReadyRun. I've even gotten myself a small figurine of my favourite character to keep by my keyboard. Just yesterday, I enjoyed a 13 hour livestream mareathon (pun intended) of the entirety of season one as the fandom gets ready for the new season next week. That was particularly fun since I was able to chat with other bronies watching the stream, which really made me feel like I was part of something as I have yet to meet any local bronies and I haven't had time to go to the Vancouver meet-ups. I don't know how long this is gonna keep going, but I'm sticking with it for now. It makes me happy.

Artistically, I feel...well, inspired, though for the most part that's as far as it has gotten. I've finally started to feel the itch to pick my trombone back up and start practicing again for the first time in 15 months. I've gotten myself a special electronic mute that should allow me to practice in the confines of my apartment without disturbing my neighbours. I just need to find some time so that I can start at least semi-regularly. Though, admittedly, my timing stinks as the added hours of this new job gives me very few middays which I can use to practice.
My pony obsession has also given me a bit of a drive to try and contribute to the community, though not much has resulted yet. I've started putting together a simple song to go with lyrics written in one of the fanfics. I've also hauled out my tablet to try and create something visually. So far, all I've been able to is a cutie mark for my OC, but the fact I was able to figure out Illustrator enough to do so is encouraging. We'll see what I end up with.
I'm also once again considering a comic project. A year or two ago, a friend approached me about writing a comic for him to draw for the Martlett (UVic's student newspaper). I wrote and stick-figured a dozen or so four-panel comics into a notebook, which I still carry around, but never got around to giving them to him in a more formal form, so the project fell flat. Now that I'm starting to figure out illustrator, drawing the comic itself may be within my reach. I very much doubt I'd get a webcomic going out of it, but it'd be something else to post here and to my tumblr.

Whoa nelly, I rambled on again something fierce. Yet another reason I need to keep up with this journal. I don't use my other social media accounts enough to compensate for my deafening silence here.

Oh yeah... I also got my degree last June. Just an extra tidbit

Okay, that was fun! I am quite happy with how the opening ceremony turned out, all things considered.

It was unfortunate that the death of that poor luger cast a pall over the ceremony. Though putting the Canadian and Olympic flags at half-mast was a well chosen sign of respect. My thoughts go to his family.

I loved the cultural portions of the ceremony, I thought all the performances were really neat, especially the welcome ceremony by the four-nations tribes right before the Parade of Nations. Technically, I thought the use of the rings and platforms at the arena along with the projections was immensely clever, not to mention some of the best Olympic ceremony camera angles ever from the roof cams.

I suppose asking for a ceremony without hiccups would have been too much. It's really a shame that the hydraulics decided it was time to break right at that moment (I wonder if that was Bombardier's handywork as well). I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. Sydney's torch was nearly extinguished because its hydraulics jammed. Oh well, a lesson for future games. Hopefully they'll get the last arm up and lit before the medal ceremonies begin. I did like that they had two cauldrons, one in and one out (at least one of them lit properly :boogie:) Though, it would have been smarter to put the outdoor flame on or beside False Creek rather than Coal Harbour, the trip from BC Place to the cauldron really put a drag on things

I have to admit I was not thrilled about Gretzky lighting the two cauldrons (though I loved the multiple lighters inside, even if it didn't work out perfectly) but hey, he is the Great One and helped nab us the 2002 hockey gold, so I guess he earned it.

Overall, I think it was a great ceremony, completed in the most Canadian fashion possible... tripping over our own well meaning feet, but getting it done in the end.
